On the way out of town, we stopped for lunch at Jack's Cosmic Hotdogs. It was the BEST hotdog I've ever eaten! (And Alton Brown agreed with me!)

After leaving Fort Sumter we made a last minute decision to drive over to Folly Beach. (I wanted to go, because a great book I read was set there!)

I don't think I've ever been on a beach in the winter!

Fort Sumter

Monday morning, we went to Fort Sumter. The fort is a (mostly) man-made island in the middle of Charleston Harbor.

It is free to get in-but of course, the ferry ride to the island is not!

We took a very chilly boat ride across the harbor. The narrated trip takes about 30 minutes and we spent about 15 of it ~~arguing~~, ~~debating~~ discussing whether or not we were going to sit inside or freeze outside. (We compromised-Jim and I in, the kids out!)

The Battery, Charleston

We had an hour at the fort. The guide did a great job of setting the scene, and then we wandered around inside and out of the walls and visited the museum.

The fort was almost completely destroyed during the Civil War, but was later restored (although not to its original size) and in use through WWII.

I love when we visit someplace that the kids have learned about at school. I think it makes the history much more real to them!

Carriage Rides, Candy, City Market and the Citadel

After Fort Moultrie, we went in to Charleston and took a carriage ride around the city. Our guide was fantastic and really knew all about the city and Charleston's long history. This was my favorite part of the trip.

We visited City Market and I am so excited that I was able to get a Gullah sweetgrass basket! I bought it from the lady who wove it. She told me that she has been weaving sweetgrass baskets for 44 years.

Next stop was Robot Candy. This photo would be a lot funnier, if I hadn't cut off Robot from the top!

The kids loved filling their own bags

and weighing them... because Mom was strict about how much they could get!

We also stopped at a super bookstore (is there anything better than a great indy book store?) called Blue Bicycle Books. I love the name and almost bought a tshirt.

We were all tired of walking by this point, so Jim and Coleman were sweet enough to go back and get the car while the rest of us hung out in the bookstore. Then we drove to the Citadel and wandered around the campus and visited the museum.

Coleman decided that military school seemed like a lot of work. Jim and I decided that Coleman could definitely benefit from military school.

We checked into our gorgeous hotel, left the kids in the room to watch TV, and Jim and I enjoyed a nice dinner at an Irish pub. What a great day!

Fort Moultrie

We started the day at Fort Moultrie, a revolution-era fort across the harbor from Fort Sumter. The first fort was built of palmetto logs and inspired the flag and nickname of South Carolina.

These cannon fired 434 pound cannon balls and could fire every four minutes... the balls were lifted by HAND by four men!

You can see Fort Sumter across the harbor. Fort Moultrie was once one of five forts surrounding the mouth of Charleston Harbor to protect the city.

The kids really liked this fort and it was a great start to our trip.

Birthday Trip to Charleston

As a "surprise" for my birthday, we took a trip to Charleston for the weekend! We couldn't leave until Saturday afternoon (lacrosse, what else?) so Saturday was basically a travel day. We ate a late dinner at RB's upon arriving in Charleston. We ate right on the river, and watched a "duck" and looked for dolphins (too cold?)

The kids decided to split the low-country boil. Our server looked a little skeptical and said she hoped they were hungry...

When the bucket came, I could understand her concern. But of course, she doesn't know how these kids can EAT!

Crab legs, lobster tail, oysters, clams, and tons of shrimp along with potatoes and corn.

Needless to say, there was nothing left. (Except the vision of Carolyn slurping down steamed oysters. Ick.)

After ringing in the New Year last night with great friends, we slept in this morning and then headed to Blue Ridge for one last holiday visit to the cabin.

We haven't had a campfire in ages because it has either been raining or we arrived too late.

Tonight we were able to roast hot dogs and s'mores and it was perfect!

The dropping temperature sent us inside as the moon came up.

Tomorrow is our last day of the Christmas break and I don't think any of us are ready for it to end...

Every year, I buy each of the kids an ornament reflecting something important or new from the previous year. This year, Christian was easy:

Coleman was a little harder; his ornament was from his summer of select lacrosse.

Carolyn was easy also, as this was her first year of lacrosse (seems like it's been longer than a year, doesn't it!?)

And every year the kids make ornaments for grandparents and aunts and uncles. This year's ornaments were fantastic!!!

Solution: Carolyn's coldtek leggings from her lacrosse clinic that morning that she stripped off and gave to him, a questionable sweatshirt found in his lacrosse bag from who knows when, and my hoodie and gloves.

Tailgate Bingo was Thursday night at the elementary school. This is probably my favorite PTA event! Jim was a trooper and spent his birthday playing BINGO... a sure sign of old age, right? :) Lucky for him, Coleman's teacher was the caller and he sneakily got him up for the whole cafeteria to tell him "Happy Birthday!" He even got to be a guest caller and call out the number! (Jim was thrilled, as you can imagine!) And the best part, for once I didn't have to clean the popcorn machine!

I found these candy corn sugar cookies on pinterest and thought they were so cute I had to make them! And they are so easy! Use your favorite sugar cookie dough recipe and split it into thirds... color one third orange and one third white. Press into a loaf pan and freeze until hardened.
