If you are ever in the middle of nowhere, you MUST stop at Lea's Lunchroom. It is halfway between Baton Rouge and Shreveport in the little town of LeCompte, LA. Lea's used to be located on the main north-south highway in Louisiana, but when the "new" interstate was built (20 years ago!), it didn't go through LeCompte. However, Lea's is so famous for its pies that it didn't matter. People still get off the interstate, drive over to LeCompte for sandwiches and pies and drive back to the interstate to continue on their way. When I was in college, we never made a trip home without stopping. So of course, on our way to Mom and Dad's from LSU we waited until we got to Lea's to eat lunch. It didn't disappoint! The boys agreed that it was the best ham and cheese sandwich they had ever tasted. Carolyn was too busy eating chocolate pie with her hands to answer. I think she may have given a meringue-covered thumbs up! Although it's been about 7 years since we've been there, it hasn't changed a bit (except for a website!) The sandwiches and pies are all made on site by hand and they even have the same list of pies on the table. There is no menu-just ham and cheese sandwiches and whatever the meat and three special of the day is written on a chalkboard on the wall. YUM!
