He's No Scarecrow
Coleman had an MRI today (nothing to worry about, just part of a routine check!) and we have confirmed that he does, in fact, have a brain. :)
And a pretty cute one at that!

Owl Pellet
Coleman dissected an owl pellet in science.
Pretty cool-until you realize what it is and where it came from!

Today is Talk Like A Pirate Day. Go here to be inventoried.
(I'm sure it is of no surprise to anyone that I am The Cap'n.)
You are The Cap'n!
Some men and women are born great, some achieve greatness and some slit the throats of any scalawag who stands between them and unlimited power. You never met a man - or woman - you couldn't eviscerate. You are the definitive Man of Action, the CEO of the Seven Seas, Lee Iacocca in a blousy shirt and drawstring-fly pants. You're mission-oriented, and if anyone gets in the way, that's his problem, now isn't? Your buckle was swashed long ago and you have never been so sure of anything as your ability to bend everyone to your will. You will call anyone out and cut off his head if he shows any sign of taking you on or backing down. If one of your lieutenants shows an overly developed sense of ambition he may find more suitable accommodations in Davy Jones' locker. That is, of course, IF you notice him. You tend to be self absorbed - a weakness that may keep you from seeing enemies where they are and imagining them where they are not.

Ramblings
Life has been busy.
School.
Lacrosse.
Church.
Lacrosse.
PTA.
I was out of Diet Coke at my house for 6 days. I KNOW. Luckily we were at the cabin for two of them, and there was DC there!
I've had the TV on FOX every minute I've been home (and on the radio in the car) watching the miner rescue. Is that not absolutely unbelievable?
My sister scheduled her c-section this week and my new niece will be born on Dec. 17, which is my Memo's birthday. Bittersweet. I suggested that the baby's middle name be Mildred after Memo. Amy wasn't amused.
The cookie jar has been empty for over a week, although I did make another batch of apple butter this week and today I made pumpkin bread. I have to bake on Wednesdays for my youth group girls!
I have a funeral to go to tomorrow for the husband of Carolyn's first grade teacher. Carolyn went to the visitation with me tonight. I didn't want to take her, but it worked out that it was the only way I could make it. She was a breath of fresh air and a blessing, I think.
I'm not sure how I'm going to get even halfway through my to-do list tomorrow.
Counting my blessings tonight...

Who Knew?
Celebrate America's Most Common Birthday, October 5
by Kristen Seymour , Posted Oct 5th 2010 10:00AM
Know somebody celebrating a birthday today? (Go ahead, check your Facebook wall. We'll wait.) Rumor has it that today, October 5, is the most common birthday in America.
For those of you with our math skills and no abacus handy, that means more babies are conceived on (or around) New Year's Eve than any other date. The average number ofbabies born on October 5, according to anybirthday.com, is 12,576 each year. Poor old May 22 is least common, with an average of just 10,259 births yearly.
Is this data based on cold, hard facts? We aren't entirely sure, but as long as there's birthday cake, we don't really care. There is cake, right?
And if you're celebrating today, then happy birthday!
An October 5 birthday makes you a Libra -- read up on your horoscope at MyDaily.

(Not So) Deep Thoughts
1. Carolyn no longer believes in the tooth fairy.
2. I have a callous on my thumb from some extreme quilting.
3. I adore all of my friends who joined me at Chili's Monday night.
4. I can't quite figure out how you can make a 59/100 on an OPEN BOOK classwork assignment.
5. Our school just got a smoothie machine in the cafeteria... I'm wondering if there is actually FRUIT in the smoothies?
6. I've woken up cold the last two mornings and I'm wearing a sweatshirt right now.
7. My car is making a funny sound and Jim has taken it in to the shop today. *updated: It's a $1K funny sound...{{SIGH}}
8. I found a cheap globe to paint and the guy at the antique store told me that globes always have the year of manufacture on them... only mine doesn't.
9. We are out of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. We are out of bread. We are out of granola bars. We are out of milk. We are almost out of Diet Coke. I think someone is going to have to drag herself to the grocery store today.
10. I don't have a 10.
What are you thinking about today?

Rule Breaker or Rule Follower?
Candy for the movie:
Purchased from Kroger before the movie. $1 instead of $4 a box.
(Plus the $31 it cost for the four of us to see a matinee.)
Are you a rule breaker or a rule follower?

Memories of Vietnam
Christian's homework assignment tonight was to interview me about my memories of the Vietnam War. How old does this teacher think I am?
My memories:
-M*A*S*H (which was about the Korean War but was really a political commentary of the Vietnam War)
-the song "19" (which I thought was "18" when I tried to find it on itunes!)
and news footage of all those people trying to get on a helicopter as Saigon fell
Since I was only two when the war ended, I'm not sure this is "A grade" information!

Financial Mess
A 44 cent stamp to mail a one cent check that will cost gas to drive to the bank to deposit.
Does not compute.

Coca-Cola Freestyle
After reading Rachel Made Me Do This this morning, I discovered that Coke is test marketing a new coke machine.

This machine will allow you to customize your beverage choice from over 100 options... black cherry, caffeine-free diet coke, anyone? These machines, called Freestyle, are being tested in Southern California and Atlanta area restaurants. However, I can't find WHICH Atlanta area restaurants. How much would my kids like to do THIS as a take-off Tuesday? They love to "mix" soft drinks at self-service drink stations! (Ever try a Sprite-Fanta combo? Ugh.)
Personally? I like just straight up Diet Coke on the Rocks. But I would like to see one of these machines... has anyone seen them yet?

It's About Time
August will mark three years in our house. My van has a programmable button for the garage door. Guess what I programmed today?
It took 3 minutes.
Well actually, it took 2 years, 10 months and 3 minutes. But whose counting?
Yay, me!

A Personal Best
Last Friday when we were in Memphis, we were at the hotel pool swimming with my sister's family and my cousins. The kids were having so much fun and the night was so pleasant, we decided to be easy and order pizza to eat poolside. David placed the call to the pizza place at 8:15 and we all sat back and visited and tried to avoid being splashed.

There was discussion at 9:15 that the pizzas really should have been there by now. A call was placed, the driver was on his way, sorry for the delay, etc.
This was repeated well, repeatedly! Finally at 11:15, my cousin and I left to go find a drive-in and get some food to feed our many hungry children. When we left, David was on the phone with the pizza place talking to a teenager who was foolish enough to tell him the truth-their computer system was messed up and the orders were coming through very slowly (ya think?)
We came home with happy meals, everyone ate and went to bed. At 12:40, the phone rang. The front desk was calling to let us know that the pizzas we had ordered 4 1/2 HOURS ago had finally arrived and what did we want to do? Jim said send him up and we threw the pizzas in the refrigerator and repeated Friday night on Saturday night! Only this time we actually had pizza to eat!
The parts I left out of the story:
Susan and I found a McDonalds and ordered a happy meal for each child and a quarter pounder for each adult, a couple of large fries, no drinks. The bill was $46.99 which we both considered a personal best!

(I tried to get my phone out to take a picture of the computer screen, but several cars drove up behind us, so I had to make do with a photo of our receipt.)
When we got to the first drive up window, we paid and pulled up to the second window. We sat for a minute and then the SAME kid who took our money, started filling our order.
While we were waiting, Walker (Susan's four-year-old) got a panicked look on his face and said he needed a bathroom. I realized he was about to throw up and hit the button to open the sliding door. Let's just say, he didn't lean far enough out of the car!
The SAME kid who took our order and filled our order brought our food to the window. I asked for lots of napkins; he gave us five. We pulled up out of the drive through line, door still open and started to clean up Walker and the van; Susan and I hysterically laughing the whole time.
Questions:
Was the kid the ONLY one working at McD's on a Friday night at 11:30 PM?
Are five napkins really a lot for an order for 13 people?
Did the cars behind us see the gak spew out of the door of my van? If so, did they still eat their McDonald's?
How much nerve does it take to be the delivery boy delivering a pizza that is 4 1/2 hours late?
Could we possibly have had ANY MORE FUN at a funeral?
(My grandmother would have loved it!)

Theme Song
THIS is my theme song and has been ever since my friend Tracy and I thought it would be FUN to roadtrip from St. Louis to Nashville with four kids under the age of four. Although, now that my kids are older, it doesn't seem quite so appropriate anymore. I'm thinking of changing it to THIS.

Just for the record, some of your guesses really scared me. I am afraid of the image I am projecting. (Seriously? Walk Like An Egyptian? What does THAT mean?!?!?!) And also, I think I need to get cooler friends. How can Jane be my only friend who has a theme song?
