Poole's Mill Covered Bridge

Coleman and his friend Vince are in lacrosse camp this week over in Cumming.  It is a trek from my house (so glad we are carpooling, Susan!) so I googled things to do in Cumming and found Poole's Mill Covered Bridge.  I didn't MapQuest it because the directions were so easy.  (You see where this is going, don't you.)  I picked the boys up and we headed over to the park to meet Vince's mom, Susan, and his sister, Ansley.

We drove. and drove. and DROVE.  We were in the middle of NOWHERE!  But we finally found it.  The park is cute-great playground and a picnic area where we spread out our blanket and had lunch.  On a whim, we had thrown the kids' bathing suits in the car so they could wade.  After they changed into their suits, we walked down the hill to the bridge.
A grist mill was built here around 1820 and the original bridge was added soon after.  It washed away in 1899 and was replaced with this 96-foot-long bridge in 1901.  The land (and mill and bridge) was originally owned by a Cherokee Chief, George Welch.  In 1838, his land was taken from him and he was sent along with all of the Cherokee people along  the Trail of Tears to Oklahoma.

Happily for the kids there was a great swimming hole!
Have I mentioned my camera troubles?  BOTH of my cameras are broken.  My small point and shoot that I take everywhere with me has a lens problem.  It is at the camera hospital hopefully being repaired.  My Canon SLR (that I heart so much!) has a stuck timer.  It will take pictures, but you have to wait for the 10 second delay.  You can imagine how well that works with three children.  So the pictures I took today weren't great... but at least I have some!
Ansley was so sweet to shepherd Carolyn around!
The rocks were really slippery!
Tom Sawyer
and Huck Finn!
The girls commiserating with each other over having brothers!
Susan and I were positively MELTING by the time we left so of course, we got milk shakes on the way home!

Our trip had an inauspicious beginning, but we had a GREAT day.  Thanks Susan, Ansley and Vince for spending the day with us!
