Lost My Marbles

I was tired of yelling and I was tired of threatening and I was tired of spankings. And I was tired of always being the bad guy. So we started the marble jars. Each kid has a jar. When they do something good they get to put a marble in. When they do something wrong, they take a marble out. When they reach the magic number of marbles (25 for my 11 year old, 20 for my 7 year old and 15 for my 4 year old) they get a treat, usually a book from the book store. Although I must admit, I am quicker to have the kids lose a marble than gain a marble, I am working on praising them more. Yesterday was a great day! No one lost any and everyone gained at least two. The marble jars have curtailed the whining and yelling (me!) and the whining and crying (them!) It works for me! Now head on over to Rocks In My Dryer for other Works for Me Wednesday tips!

I like this idea. I think maybe I should make a jar for myself for anytime I get mad (or don't get mad) with my husband for something silly. Something tangible is always helpful.

This is a great idea! I will try to remember that when I have my own!

I love this idea -- I think having a visual reminder like this would really work with my 3-year-old. Thanks for sharing!

There is nothing like positive reinforcement. And besides, you get an added bonus: it keeps you from losing your own marbles. (Sorry, couldn't resist!)

This is a great idea. I, too am tired of the threatening and yelling. I'm going to try this with my 3 year old daughter. Thanks for the idea!

Great idea. My daughter's 1st grade classroom has a marble jar but I'd never thought about using the idea at home.

I mom, therefore I blog.
